I NEED TO GET MY FINANCES IN ORDER.

DO I NEED AN ACCOUNTANT OR A FINANCIAL PLANNER?

28th November 2019

10th October 2019

It’s not uncommon for our clients to ask us tax questions and our accounting friends to be asked for financial advice.  Whilst we each know the basics of each other’s world and there is an element of crossover, we are each only licenced to provide specific advice in our areas of expertise.

If you are unsure whether you need an accountant or financial planner here is a quick comparison of each.

What an accountant can do:

An accountant typically will provide you with advice on your tax obligations - helping you lodge and prepare a tax return, keep your records and payments with the Australian Taxation Office up to date and lodge reports on your behalf.

If you own an investment property or are a small business owner, knowing what deductions you can/cannot claim will no doubt save you time and money. Accountants will assist you in ascertaining what you should claim and give you peace of mind that you’re meeting all obligations to the Australian Taxation Office.

What a financial planner can do:

A financial planner can provide you with personalised advice for a range of matters, from building your wealth, saving for your children’s education, paying off your home loan, planning for retirement through a process which considers many parts of your financial puzzle.

Planners often consider a holistic approach to your life and your finances, considering your current situation, where you want to be and help create a long-term plan that motivates you both mentally and financially to get you there, adjusting and adapting to your life as it changes.

Financial Planners help you gain the confidence that your financial future is secure.

Quite often, having both and accountant and financial planner in your corner that communicate and work together towards your goals will give you the best results.
